Chrysostom, Theophany of Our Lord

Friday, January 6

The Master comes to be baptized together with servants; they, however, come in order to repent, but Jesus (came) in order to be made known to the people; as John said. That He should be made manifest to Israel. The Lord is baptized, not as one who needed cleansing, but that He may wash and cleanse us from our sins, and teach us to prepare ourselves by purification, so as not to defile our baptism with wicked habits and deeds. We have been marked with the sign of adoption by our baptism, and we must keep it pure, undefiled and unblemished, with great effort and attentiveness.

From John Chrysostom, The Gospel Commentary, translated from Slavonic into English by Abbot German Ciuba (Church of the Nativity of Christ, Old Rite, Erie, Pa.)
