FATHER’S DAY
Sunday, June 21 we celebrate Father’s Day. In the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the father’s life is viewed as a foundational vocation. He serves as the spiritual leader of the “domestic church” – the family. His role is to model God’s love and mercy, making it easier for his children to understand and trust their Heavenly Father.
Rooted in Eastern Christian teachings, a father is considered the spiritual guide of his home. He is tasked with fostering a moral environment, leading family prayer, and ensuring religious traditions are passed down.
A father’s loving presence acts as a living icon of God the Father. Children look to their father for moral direction, security, and the foundation of their worldview.
The vocation of fatherhood flows from the holy Sacrament of Marriage. It is rooted in the deep, sacrificial love a husband has for his wife.
Children learn to love and respect others by watching how their father cherishes their mother and treats his family.
The concept of the “Father” extends to the priesthood. Our priests are the spiritual guides of their parishes, leading them in prayer and witnessing the love of God the Father for his children. On this Father’s Day, we thank our priests for their presence among us and for their ministry leading us in our spiritual journey.
Given the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, the importance of fathers protecting their homeland, defending their families, and fighting for a free future is heavily emphasized. The Church continuously lifts up fathers who bear the heavy burdens of military duty, chaplains, and the trauma of war.
Today, we look to Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, the husband of Mary, our Theotokos. Saint Joseph serves as the premier spiritual model for Father’s Day because his life exemplifies quiet strength, selfless protection, and faithful nurturing. His actions provide a timeless blueprint for fatherhood.
Saint Joseph bravely safeguarded his family from grave danger, uprooting his life to flee to Egypt to protect the infant Jesus.
As a carpenter, he modeled the dignity of hard work, dedicating his days to physically amd materially providing for his home.
Saint Joseph demonstrated total obedience and trust in divine guidance gracefully facing the unexpected challenges and life changes.
Saint Joseph actively guided Jesus, teaching Him life skills, the value of work, and the foundations of prayer.
Today we pray for all of our fathers, living and deceased, as well as all of our spiritual fathers. We ask Almighty God to bless them in their vocation of fatherhood and to guide and protect them. As we do this, we thank our Father in Heaven for our fathers and for all of the blessings that we receive.
