It is with deep sadness that I must inform you about +Rt. Rev. Mitrat Archpriest Msgr. John Squiller passing into Eternity.
The generosity of your prayers is requested for the repose of the soul of Msgr. John Squiller, who fell asleep in the Lord this morning (May 1, 2020).
A Brief Biography
Monsignor John Squiller was born on January 28, 1930 at Bairdford, PA -a town about twenty miles north of Pittsburgh.
He attended West Deer Twp. High School where he played three seasons of varsity football and graduated in 1948 as co-salutatorian.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1952, having majored in Classics (Greek and Latin) and philosophy.
He next attended St. Josaphat’s Seminary and The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and received from the latter institution a Licentiate of Sacred Theology degree (S.T.L.) in 1956.
On June 14, 1956 he was ordained to the priesthood by the Most Reverend Ambrose Senyshyn, OSBM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia, PA.
Ukrainian Catholic parishes in which he has served include those al Ansonia, Brooklyn, Auburn, Spring Valley, Rochester, Yonkers, Stamford, Hamptonburgh, Woonsocket, and Fall River.
At Hamptonburgh Monsignor was also the Director of Holy Spirit Cemetery for five years.
He was on the staff of St. Basil Prep School in Stamford at four different times for a total of twenty years as Religion instructor, track and Held coach, athletic director, etc. He also served as rector of St. Basil College on two occasions for a total of eight years. He was conference master and instructor of Religion at the Mother of God Academy in Stamford for six years.
Papal honors received include Chaplain of His Holiness conferred by Pope Paul VI in 1978 and Prelate of Honor of His Holiness conferred by Pope John Paul II in 1993.
