Saturday of the Holy and Righteous Lazarus

April 1

Chrysostom on John 11:1-45

This great and supernatural miracle is recorded only by the Evangelist John; it was omitted by the other evangelists, inasmuch as Lazarus was still alive (when they wrote) and could still be seen. It is said that on account of this miracle alone John the Theologian wrote the rest of His Gospel; also, (he did so) because the other evangelists had said nothing about the generation of Christ in eternity. It sought to demonstrate that Christ was the Son of God and God, that He had risen again, and that there was a resurrection of the dead, which was confirmed by Lazarus.

From John Chrysostom, The Gospel Commentary, translated from Slavonic into English by Abbot German Ciuba (Church of the Nativity of Christ, Old Rite, Erie, Pa.)
