Beginning of the Indiction, That Is the New Year

September 1

Chrysostom on Luke 4:16-22

The Lord heals all; He purges away all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. Let no one, therefore, remain unenlightened and unhealed any longer, but with faith let him draw near and receive a blessing from God and mercy from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. For great and unutterable are His kindness and His love towards man.

Blessed Theophylact on Luke 4:16-22

Thus he teaches us that we should first work to teach and bring benefit to those of our own circle, before lavishing kindness on others.

From Blessed Theophylact, The Explanation of the Holy Gospel According to Luke, Chrysostom Press, 2007

1 Timothy 2:1-7

I desire, therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men.

Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost, September 3:

Chrysostom on Matthew 22:1-14

Call those who were neglected and whomever ye happen to find; the Church of God can accommodate them.

Blessed Theophylact on Matthew  22:1-14

For it is God’s part to call, but to become one of the chosen or not, is our part.

From Blessed Theophylact, The Explanation of the Holy Gospel According to Matthew, Chrysostom Press, 2007

2 Corinthians 1:21-2:4

…we are helpers of your joy: for in faith you stand.

The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady, the Mother of God, and Ever-virgin Mary, September 8:

Chrysostom on the Nativity

Ineffably and without defilement she gave birth by the Holy Spirit to our Lord Jesus Christ. Through her prayers and supplications may we all become worthy to obtain mercy, as we celebrate her all-holy Nativity….

Blessed Theophylact on Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28

Hospitality, which Martha displays, is a great virtue which ought  not to be scorned; but it is even greater to give heed to spiritual words. By means of the first, the body is nourished; by means of the second, the soul is brought to life.

From Blessed Theophylact, The Explanation of the Holy Gospel According to Luke, Chrysostom Press, 2007

Philippians 2:5-11

He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.
