What greater example of God’s mercy toward sinners is there than the invitation to the tax collector, Matthew, to become a follower of Jesus? The tax collector abandoned earthly wealth as soon as Jesus invited him. He joined a band of men whose leader had no riches at all. Mathew immediately took Jesus into his home and arranged a party, inviting the only friends he had—other tax collectors and sinners.
As they sat at the banquet table, Pharisees pointed an accusing finger. But Jesus said, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Sharing a meal—breaking bread together—is one of the most intimate things we do as humans. When Jesus sat and ate with Matthew, it was a signal of His great mercy toward sinners, and an invitation to us to sit with Him at the communion table.
In announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis drew our attention to Psalm 136, where the phrase “His mercy endures forever” is repeated no less than 26 times. By one count, this refrain appears in the Bible 41 times. Pope Francis explains: “To repeat continually ‘His mercy endures forever’ seems to break through the dimensions of space and time, inserting everything into the eternal mystery of love. It is as if to say that not only in history, but for all eternity man will always be under the merciful gaze of the Father.”
Before his Passion, Jesus prayed this psalm. Matthew attests to this in his Gospel when he says that, “when they had sung a hymn,” Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. When He instituted the Eucharist, He did so in the light of His mercy. Within the very same context of mercy, Jesus entered upon His passion and death, conscious of the great mystery of love that he would consummate on the cross.
Knowing that Jesus himself prayed this psalm makes it even more meaningful for us to take up the refrain in our daily lives by praying these words of praise: “His mercy endures forever.”
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy the Church offers us a general pardon, an indulgence that is open to all, and the possibility to renew our relationship with God and neighbor. It’s an opportunity to deepen our faith and to live with a renewed commitment to Christian witness. In calling the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis focuses the attention of the world on the merciful God who invites all men and women to return to Him.
Our prayer today: Jesus, help me walk away without hesitation from the things of this world that keep me from following you.

Який може бути кращий приклад Божого Милосердя для грішників, ніж запрошення митника Матея стати послідовником Ісуса? Митник залишив земне багатство відразу після того, як Ісус запросив його. Він приєднався до групи чоловіків, яких провідник не володів жодним багатсвом. Матей запросив Ісуса додому та справив бенкет, запрошуючи єдиних своїх друзів, тобто інших митників та грішників.
Сівши за бенкетний стіл, фарисеї звинувачували це. Проте Ісус підкреслив: «Я хочу милосердя, а не жертви. Я не прийшов кликати праведників, але грішників.» Ділитися трапезою, ламати хліб разом – це одна з найбільш інтимних речей, яку ми робимо, як люди. Коли Ісус сидів та їв з Матеєм, це був знак великого милосердя до грішників, та запрошенням до нас сидіти з Ним за спільним столом.
Проголошуючи Ювілейний Рік Милосердя, Папа Франциск звертає нашу увагу на Псалом 136, де фраза «Його милосердя триватиме вічно!» повторюється не менше, ніж 26 разів. У Біблії ця фраза повторюється 41 раз. Папа Франциск пояснює: «Постійно повторювати про те, що Його Милосердя триватиме вічно» ламає виміри простору і часу, ставлячи все у вічну таємницю любові. Завжди протягом історії, людина буде під покровом Милосердного Батька.»
Перед своїми страстями, Ісус молився цей Псалом. Матей засвідчив про це у своєму Євангелії, коли він сказав: «коли вони співали гимн», Ісус та його учні пішли на Оливну Гору. Коли Він встановив Євхаристію, Він здійснив це у світлі Свого Милосердя. В контексті Милосердя, Ісус розпочав cвої страждання і смерть, усвідомлюючи велику таємницю любові, яку він здійснить на хресті.
Знаючи про те, що сам Ісус молився цей псалом, спонукає нас частіше щоденно промовляти у молитві ці слова прослави: «Його Милосердя триватиме вічно.»
Протягом цього Ювілейного Року Милосердя, Церква пропонує нам загальне прощення, привілей відкритий усім, та можливість відновити наші відносини з Богом та ближнім. Це – нагода поглибити нашу віру та постійно сповняти обов’язок християнського свідчення. Відкриваючи Ювілейний Рік Милосердя, Папа Франциск зосереджує увагу світу на Милосердного Бога, який запрошує усіх чоловіків та жінок навернутися до Нього.
Наша сьогоднішня молитва: «Ісус, допоможи мені уникати речей цього світу, які віддаляють мене від Тебе.»
